Why were there many regimes in northern Italy in ancient times, while southern Italy was relatively unified?

We must begin with the collapse of the Western Roman Empire.

Huns : a nomadic tribe which came between eastern edge of the Altai Mountains and the Caspian Sea.

Goths: a nomadic Germanic people who fought against Roman rule in the late 300s and early 400s A.D.

Visigoth : western tribes of Goths

Ostrogoths : Eastern tribes of Goths

Beginning in the early 5th century before the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Ostrogoths migrated with the Huns tribe which were active in the Pannonian Region, and invaded Danube Valley and Northern Italy, and kept their relationship with the Eastern and Western Roman Empires.
